103 Years of Friendship and Strategic Partnership: Albania – United States of America
(July 28, 1922 – July 28, 2025)
Flamur Bucpapaj
Today, on July 28, 2025, we proudly and gratefully commemorate the 103rd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Albania and the United States of America — a partnership that has endured through historical challenges and times, yet has remained strong, sincere, and strategic.
A Long History of Cooperation and Trust
On July 28, 1922, following the official recognition of the Albanian state by the U.S. earlier that year, diplomatic relations between the two countries were formally established. This marked one of the most important acts of international legitimacy for Albania, which had recently emerged from World War I and was striving to build an independent, sovereign, and internationally recognized state.
Since then, the United States has been one of the greatest supporters of the Albanian nation — not only for Albania but also for Albanians in the region. The U.S. contribution to preserving Albania’s independence during turbulent periods is undeniable.
From Communist Isolation to an Unbreakable Friendship
During the totalitarian communist regime, bilateral relations were severed for decades. However, hope for a free Albania remained alive within the Albanian diaspora in America, which played a crucial role in preserving national identity and supporting the democratic aspirations of the Albanian people.
After 1991, with the fall of communism, the U.S. became Albania’s closest and most decisive partner in its democratic transition. With American support, Albania undertook key political, institutional, and economic reforms that oriented the country toward Euro-Atlantic integration.
A Deepened Partnership in Every Field
Today, relations between Albania and the United States are stronger than ever. Albania is a worthy NATO ally, an active contributor to peacekeeping missions, and a trusted partner in the fight against terrorism, corruption, and organized crime.
American support for judicial reform, strengthening the rule of law, and ensuring democratic institutions has been fundamental in Albania’s path toward a more just and honest society.
Meanwhile, the Albanian community in the U.S. serves as a living bridge of friendship and cooperation. They represent the best values of both peoples and significantly contribute to strengthening economic, cultural, and political ties.
A Friendship That Has Stood the Test of Time
“We will never forget the historic role of the U.S. for the Albanian people,” is a message often repeated in public discourse in Albania. Indeed, this is not just a symbolic phrase, but a deep sentiment of a people who have found in the U.S. a permanent ally.
Former U.S. President Woodrow Wilson was one of the greatest defenders of Albanian statehood at the Paris Peace Conference (1919), rejecting attempts to partition Albania. This stance remained a cornerstone in Albanian-American relations.
Looking Towards the Future
On this 103rd anniversary, it is time not only to remember the past but to build the future on the strong foundations of this friendship. New global challenges — such as climate change, cybersecurity, sustainable development, and peacekeeping — require closer cooperation than ever.
Albania remains committed to further strengthening its relations with the United States and sharing joint responsibilities in promoting international peace and security.
Happy 103rd Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Albania and the United States!
Let us move forward together, in friendship, trust, and a shared vision for a better world.
