30 Years of Friendship Between the USA and National Media
By Flamur Buçpapaj
Beginning – Courage in 1990
I was the first student to give an interview to the “Voice of America” in 1990, when Albania was still under the communist regime. At that time, the country was isolated, every move was monitored, and fear was part of daily life. The first visit of Ambassador Rayerson was conducted with me in Shkodër, at the university, where I received his and the USA’s support. This moment was not merely symbolic; it was the first step in a relationship that would become a pillar of our national security and development.
Challenges in SHIK – Clashes and Circumstances
During my service in SHIK, I defended the American line and not the Islamic influences as the former SHIK leadership did. For this, I had continuous clashes and strong tensions with those who sought to overthrow the country’s Western orientation. In 1997, when communist gangs seized power violently, the circumstances were dramatic: political destabilization, anarchy, and a lack of rule of law. For the safety of myself and my family, I was forced to go to school in the USA while maintaining connections with American values and institutions.
Concrete Contribution and Cooperation
During my career in national defense, I also obtained American citizenship and continued to contribute to projects that strengthen relations between Albania and the USA. My company, Tplani Shpk, has carried out tenders from the American embassy for:
Reconstruction of the Tirana Clock Tower
Embassy training grounds
Interior reconstruction of diplomatic buildings
Reconstruction of the Albanological Center
These projects demonstrate that our friendship is long-lasting, sustainable, and based on national values and strategic cooperation.
Causes and Historical Importance
Albania has historical and strategic reasons to value the USA:
It overthrew communism and opened the path to democracy
It liberated Kosovo and protected the integrity of the Albanian nation
It integrated us into NATO and guarantees national security

Without this partnership, the consequences would have been political destabilization, threats to sovereignty, and loss of European prospects. Friendship with the USA is not merely symbolic; it is the foundation of our existence as a nation.
The Role of National Media
National media has played a decisive role in this journey. It has supported accurate information, promoted democratic values, and built bridges connecting us with the USA. Without this media support, citizens would not understand the importance of the alliance, and the dissemination of information would have been fragmented. National media is proof that partnership and friendship are not just diplomatic relations but a supportive network that preserves…
Necessary Reforms and the Role of the USA
Albania needs strategic intervention from the USA to ensure stability and democracy:
Ensure that the law prevents a prime minister from holding power for more than two terms
Intervene and monitor the electoral system, as we have never had complete and fair elections
Monitor the judicial system and law enforcement agencies, because long-standing politicians become corrupt and jeopardize national interests
These measures are not unnecessary interventions; they are a necessary condition to protect democracy and Albania’s future. The USA has the experience and authority to help strengthen institutions, uphold the law, and maintain the balance of power.
Consequences and Significance of the Friendship
Thirty years of friendship with the USA is not a personal story; it is a political, strategic, and moral alliance. It has directly influenced:
Political and military stability
Economic and infrastructural development
Protection of sovereignty and national integrity
Albania’s affirmation on the international stage
The circumstances, personal sacrifices, and political challenges show that this friendship is a strong foundation for the country’s future. It is not only a strategic alliance; it is a protection of national values, a guarantee for citizens, and a symbol of our strength.
